The collection 'The history of choro through the press' originates from research that I have been developing for more than a decade on the lives of the "chorões" we know the most, hear about, be touched by, and who made the news in the newspaper.

In this first volume you will learn the story of one of the icons of choro: Alfredo da Rocha Vianna Filho; our beloved Pixinguinha. Born in Rio de Janeiro, in 1897, on May 4th, and also died in this city, on February 17th, 1973, Pixinguinha left a huge legacy for Brazilian popular music and choro. His life has been the subject of some biographies, films and academic works, but every time researchers find new facts about the musician, considered the 'Father of Modern Choro'. Pixinguinha composed, arranged, conducted, played, taught... he lived for music and choro.

As a public man, an artist, he was widely portrayed in the pages of the Brazilian press. Well connected with Rio de Janeiro's elite, Pixinguinha was a close friend of Paulo Bittencourt, owner of Correio da Manhã, a newspaper that spanned the 20th century and one of the most persecuted during the military dictatorship. In Careta magazine, Pixinguinha has always been highlighted with articles full of photographs that we cannot find in any of the biographies already published about the musician. Pixinguinha also appears in Tribuna da Imprensa, O Jornal, A Noite, in all the printed matter of the group of businessman Assis Chateaubriand, with whom he was also friends and for whom he hosted several parties. It was Jornal do Brasil that recorded and reported Pixinguinha's statements to MIS RJ (1966 and 1968). In the newspaper A Batalha, in the 1930s, when he took the stage alongside Aracy Cortes, Patrício Teixeira and Catulo da Paixão Cearense, at the Lyrico theater, or played in plays by the playwright Chocolat, Pixinguinha was already on the agenda. It also made headlines in O Malho, in O Cruzeiro magazine...

Pixinguinha has been mentioned in the Brazilian press since the 1910s. In 1919, with the creation of Os Oito Batutas, his presentations began to appear in Rio de Janeiro newspapers, and, since then, Pixinguinha has always been accompanied by journalists, as a great celebrity in the world of Brazilian popular music, although he himself never wanted this fame and this 'status'.

With a lot of charisma, humility and the genius of someone who composed hundreds of songs, Pixinguinha interacted with dozens of journalists to whom he reported important moments in his life. Today, thanks to these journalists we are able to learn more about this choro genius, and better understand who Pixinguinha was (and his work), a fundamental character in the pages of the history of choro, which in this collection is narrated through the press.
